Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sparking at points on Kohler K301, engine catalog, lawn tractor

Question
I am rebuilding a 1968 Ford lawn tractor with a K301 Kohler engine. The engine runs fine except at high speed.I found the point sparking was directly related to how well the engine runs. How much spark is ok at the points and how do I limit it? The coil, cond.,plug & points are OEM Kohler.

Answer
Hello Dave:

From your Description it Sounds like the Point Set is Improperly Gapped. Make Sure the Point Set Plunger is Fully Extended when you Gap the Point Set (.020in or .015in). If the Gap is Too Wide, then you will have the Problem you Described. It Sounds like the Point Set Gap is Too Wide. This Explains the Sparking at High RPMs. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
