Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh HH60 no load RPM setting, trouble shooting guide, tecumseh engine

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1982 Troy-bilt Horse tiller, with the Tecumseh HH60-105115H 6HP engine.  It is in great shape, except someone previously messed with the governor settings.  I have the Tecumseh service tech manual, but it does not list the RPM setting, stating to look at a microfilm page for it. I do not have access to that.

Do you have access to this RPM number?  I want to set it correctly to get all the performance possible, but do not want to overspeed the engine.

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello David:

Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf  .  This Site Addy; http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Tecumseh/tmain.html has a Link to a PDF Trouble-Shooting Guide. Simple Select the Free PDF Download for the Tecumseh Trouble-Shooting Guide. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers HH60. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing. I Usually Set the Idle to the Lowest Possible RPMs that Allow the Engine to Idle Properly without Stalling. This is Usually a Good Idle RPM Setting. The RPMs for Idle will Vary with the Engines Application and the Amount of Wear on the Engines Components. Usually 600 to 800 RPMs is a Good Idle Speed, However I have had to Engines Idle at 1000 RPMs so they Would Not Stall. The Full Throttle RPMs is where you have to Worry. To Properly Set the Governor and be Sure the Engine will Not Over Rev; The Following is an Instruction File I Made for Making this Adjustment. Any Input is Appreciated.  If you Removed/Loosened the Governor Arm to Remove the Carburetor, then Reset the Governor. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor.**  Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: I have the tech manual which gives me that information, but the stop screw for full throttle was messed with and I need to know the full throttle no load RPM number to set it properly for full throttle operation. I have no problem with idle adjustment, that is easy.

The tech manual says to check the "microfiche card #30" for the rpm numbers.  I want to set the high speed stop screw for the specified RPM at full throttle. Just cannot find that number anywhere.

Answer
Hello Again David:

I Appologize for the Mistake. I Misunderstood your Question and thought you wanted an Idle RPM. The Max RPM for this Engine is 3600 to 3800 RPMs and Red Line is Around 4000 RPMs. However 3400 RPMs is Ideal Max RPMs for Most of these Engine. I had this Article Sent to me from 1 of my Mechanics and I think it will Help Explain; http://www.abbysguide.com/ope/discussions/20125-0-1.html .
