Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mcculloch chainsaw, reed valves, carb adjustments

Question
QUESTION: I have a powermac 6 chainsay purchased in 1975 (mod#600088u, ser#11-024370)by a friend. Was given to me in 1992 after only about 2 hours run time.  Saw would start first pull when cold, idle well, run for 3-10 minutes and die...couldn't restart w/o waiting 10-15 minutes where it would repeat the above.  Had it supposedly repaired in 1992 with carb kit.  Never bothered to check it after repair until began to use it last week. Exact same problem exists. All carb adjustments correct per owner manual but still run only few mins, then have to wait to restart.  Carb clean, air and fuel filter clean, plug like new, has fire after it dies.  I cannot find anything wrong.  Can you help?  Also how important is it to use gas additive to todays unleaded fuel since engine was designed for leaded fuel....damage reed valves?  Any ideas on where to obtain shop manual for the saw? Thank you profusely in advance.

ANSWER: Hello George:

Jenn-Feng Purchased McCulloch in 1999 when they went Bankrupt. MTD Supports Mcculloch in the US for Jenn-Feng. You can View a Breakdown of this Unit at this Site Addy;
http://www.ordertree.com/cms/parts-lookup-help/73.html and Select the OEM (Mcculloch) and Enter the Model Number (600088U) and Click Go. If No Results, then Select the Click Here for Help. Now Scroll through the Units Listed and Locate your Model. Then Select your Model and View
the Breakdown/IPL. I Used the 11-600088U Power Mac 6A for a Reference. The Problem you Described is Usually Caused by 1- The Tank Cap Not Venting Properly. 2- On this Model the Point Set Condenser is Bad and Requires Replacing. When this Condenser Heats Up it Grounds the Point Set and the Plug Stops Firing. Once this Condenser Cools the Ground is Broken and the Plug Fires so the Engine will Run Again. This Process will Continue Until the Condenser Shorts Out Completely and the Unit will Keep the Point Set Grounded. Usually the Point Set and Condenser are Replaced as 1 Component. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION:  John,  Called two small engine repair shops to purchase solid state module you reccommended.  both were familiar with Rotary but both said part #8687 not a good number and would not research further for me. Would you be kind enough  to confirm part number please.  Also will the existing coil work OK or is a new one part of the kit?  Do you know appox cost?  Really appreciate your sticking with me....will give you super rating when I get the problem solved.  Where you located old friend?  George in Englewood OH

Answer
Hi George:

I Inverted the Numbers for the Part #. I Apologize for the Mistake. The Rotary Part # is 8786, Not 8687. Go to this Site Addy;
http://www.rotarycorp.com/CGI-BIN/LANSAWEB?PROCFUN+WEBAPPLC+HOMPAGE+CED and Select Full Catalog from the Products Tab Drop Menu. Then on the Left of the Page Select Ignition in the Item Class Menu. Then Select Solid State in the Item Sub-Class. Now you can See the Solid State Ign Modules Offered. Sometimes the #8786 and the #9334 will Both Work on this Saw. Thanks for Letting me Know I have the Wrong Part Number in my Parts Index Also. I will Make the Changes as Soon as I Send you this E-Mail.
