Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower fuel cap, Gas cap

Question
Yesterday, I dropped the fuel cap for my craftsman lawn mower. There were parts inside the cap that fell out: a piece of foam with a small hole in center, a metal cone shaped piece with a hole in center, and a black rubber piece with 3 small holes in center.  What is the proper sequence to put this back together?  This is for engine model number 143.975504.

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

The fuel cap needs to be in good working order so that air can escape if the tank warms up.  When something that is inexpensive falls apart it is always better to replace rather than repair.

It sounds like you are in need of a new Gas cap.

I would recommend that you contact an authorized Craftsman dealer and they should be able to sell you one.

If you have any further difficulties, let me know.

Regards,
Howard
