Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter spring replacement, replace starter rope

Question
i have a craftsman ( poulan) 32cc gas blower, how do you replace the recoil starter spring so the pull cord goes back in? thanks i need help, i can call anyone!!!

Answer
Hello David,

This pull rope replacement is a little tricky, but only the first time.

Firstly, put the shroud/recoil assembly into a clamp on your workbench.
This way it won't move when you don't want it to.

Yank the existing rope all the way out.

Secure the pulley using a vice-grip, making sure not to let the spring rewind. The pulley is this way held in place for you when you are ready to insert the rope.

Cut the knot off and get the existing rope out of there. Once you do this remember to keep the handle for use with the replacement rope.

If you are replacing a broken rope - wind up the recoil spring prior to installing new rope.

Twisting the pulley in the direction against the spring tension keep turning until it stops.  Then back off one turn, to ensure that you don't over tighten the spring.

Use a rope that is the same gauge and length as the old one.

You may have to melt the end of the rope to prevent it from coming apart.

Turn the pulley until you can see that the rope is positioned cose to the opening in the housing as possible, + then insert the rope into the housing opening and through the pulley opening.

Put the handle on the rope and then tie a knot in the rope.

Release the vice-grips and let the pulley spring rewind into the pulley until the groove is full.

Check to make sure the operation is functioning correctly.

Good Luck,

Howard
