Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton engine valve, valve spring compressor, briggs stratton engine

Question
Hi John,

I have a Ford YT-16 hp Briggs & Stratton twine engine model 402707 Type 0156 01 Code 84120612.
It is in good condition and was running very well until a few weeks ago when it began getting very hot and then I stop using until I had more time to investigate. When I did, check a gain I found mice nesting between the engine and the air cowling. I did remove all of the debris and then started the engine and to my surprise, it began missing and I found the cylinder not having any pressure. I took the head off and found one of the valves not working. I did not have any manuals, but, I do have a part list. My Question is, is it worth fix it? And if yes, how do I get to the valve. I did take the little cover off where I taught the valve heads would be , but I could not see anything. Any suggestions. Thank you for your help and thank you for what you do.

Best regards,
Tony Trigo

Answer
With the head off turn the flywheel till the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder.  Look for any burn spot in the cylinder wall.  If none should be ok..  To put the valve back in remove the cover over the valve springs.  remove the spring and keeper that have come off.  Use a valve spring compressor to squeeze the spring and put it back in the opening.  Slide the valve back in and through the spring.  Slip the keeper back on and release the spring.  Check to be sure there is valve clearance.  Button it up and I would advice charging the oil.  Hope it helps.
