Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda 5.5 hp wont start, air gap, honda dealer

Question
My Honda 5.5 hp wont start.  There is no spark at the spark plug. Cleaned air filter, magneto, flywheel and replaced on/off switch and spark plug and no remedy.

Answer
Hi Hector,

Well it sounds as if the electrical current isn't reaching the spark plug.  Check all connections leading to the plug.

Is your magneto set to the correct gap [between the stator and the flywheel]. The ignition armature needs to be set at a certain gap from the flywheel. Many stators use a .010" air gap.  Your machine might be differently designed though.

Ask a dealer for the correct distance from an authorized Honda dealer [if you don't have those specifications].  You'll need a correct shim to help you set the gap properly.

You can also check the stop [kill] switch to make certain this is working properly.

Good luck,

Howard
