Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stack pulley, equipment model numbers, diameter shaft

Question
QUESTION: I am trying to find a stack pulley that will fit on a 1 1/8" drive shaft of my lawn mower engine. The engine is a B&S ELS725 26HP twin cylinder.  I am replacing my engine on my 6216 Simplicity tractor which has a 1" diameter shaft and therefore can not use the stack pulley on the old engine. The mounting bolts line up fine. The top pulley is 3" diameter and takes a 5/8" V-belt and the bottom pulley is 4 5/8" diameter and takes a 1/2" V-belt.  The total length of the stack pulley is 7 1/4".  Anything fairly close should work since I could probably use different size belts if needed. The drive shaft on the new engine has a key slot. Do you know where I can find one. Thanks, MR

ANSWER: Hello Michael:

Did the Engine with the 1 1/18" Shaft have a Stack Pulley? Was the Engine Taken from Another Mower? There are Several Companies that Offer Stack Pulleys. However, These Days they List the Stack Pulleys Using a OEM Model Number from the Unit the Pulley was Installed onto and your Local Small Engine Service Center will have a List of All the Available Pulleys for Small Engines by the OEM Equipment Model Numbers. If you Resubmit this Question on Sunday Night, then I can Call a Few of my Contacts and Search for this Stack Pulley for you. A Few Aftermarket Companies Do List the Stack Pulleys by Dimensions. Thanks.

QUESTION: No the engine did not come with a stack pulley. The new engine is a B&S 26HP ELS725 Twin, model 446777.  The dimensions of the old stack pulley are as follows: total length is 7 1/4", top pulley is 3" diameter and takes 5/8" V-belt, bottom pulley is 4 5/8" diameter and takes a 1/2" V-belt. If there are any other dimensions that you would need please let me know. If the stack pulley is not exact I could probably change the belt length to accommodate it. Thanks, MR

Hi Again Michael:

Sorry for Taking so Long. I have had No Luck Locating a Stack Pulley like you Described or One of Dimensions that will Replace the Original Size Stack Pulley. I Explained to Each of my Suppliers (47 of them)what I was Looking for and the Variations that would Perform the Same if an Exact Replacement was Available. I am Still Waiting on 9 of my Supplier to Finish Looking in their Stock for a Replacement. I will Keep in Touch with you as they Contact me and Hopefully we will get Lucky. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks for all your work to help me. I have also tried to find a stack pulley from websites and local lawn mower companies in my area. It seems they can not work backward like we are trying to do.  They say that if they know the model no. of the tractor then they can look up the part.  Unfortunately, I bought the engine over the internet so I don't know what tractor it was used on. If I give the engine model to various lawn mower manufactures, that does not help either, that still is taking a part on the lawn mower and trying to work backwards.  I did find that the motor was used on at 2004 Craftsman GT5000, but that tractor also used a Kohler engine and that tractor did not use a stack pulley. It used two separate pulleys. A drive pulley and clutch pulley. Most places are telling me that they don't think stack pulleys were made for engines with shafts greater than 1". If there was one made for a 1 1/8" shaft we still have to deal with the size of the two pulleys and the distance they are apart from each other, plus the size belt each pulley takes. I was thinking that I could take off the stack pulley from my old Briggs engine that has the 1" shaft and see if a machine shop could bore out the hole to fit the 1 1/8" shaft. The old stack pulley is from a 6216 Simplicity tractor, model 1691035 and the part no. for the pulley is 1676274. What do you think?
