Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): wiring diagram, briggs stratton, key switch

Question
QUESTION: Have Briggs & Stratton 14hp Vanguard engine model #294777 type 0108-01
code 90022011.  There are a yellow wire, red and black wire coming from a
2"square part by the starter. Wanting to wire up engine with simple switch  so
will run to make grandkids a train. Can you help with how to hook up wires?
Thanks

ANSWER: The yellow wire is the kill wire.  This is where the ignition grounds to stop the engine.  It usually hooks up to a terminal at the control panel where the throttle cable attaches.  The red and black is to charge the battery.  One has a bump in the wire indicating there is a diode in the wire.  This goes to + side the other goes to - side of battery.  This is for an engine with recoil start.  If there is an electric starter there has to be a key switch wired into the system.  goes from the battery to the second to the starter motor with the key switch in that circuit.  The wires from the engine still do the same thing.  Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thanks, motor has an electric starter.  If using a 3 position ignition switch,
leads: ignition, battery and solenoid,   where would the ignition wire go too?

Answer
Do you have a 3 position key switch or using 3 positions on one with more?  There should be a letter code on the switch.  B=battery, M= magneto, G = ground.  The wire with the diode goes to the battery + jump the two small terminals on the solenoid.  I think that will do it.  The key switch would go in the jumped circuit.  So, battery - to ground. battery + to solenoid, the key switch would go inbetween the small terminals on the solenoid and the key switch G terminal would go to ground.  The wire with the diode will go to the + side of the battery. other two to the key switch.  then a wire from the solenoid to the starter.  I think!!
