Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler CV15S Engine Rebuild, kohler engine, blue smoke

Question
I have a Scotts tractor with a Kohler CV15S engine. It is around 13 years old,and I mow around 1/2 acre.It is getting loud,I think its the muffler, but its also losing power as it warms up,and just recently has a lot of blue smoke at start up.Could that be a ring? I am considering pulling the engine, and doing a rebuild as the rest of the tractor is in good shape. How do I know wether to use an oversize piston or rings? How do I know if the connecting rod should be replaced? I want to do a complete job,but I also dont want to replace parts unneccesarily.Shoud I have the block or crank honed by a machine shop?Where can I buy a rebuild kit? Thanks for your advice,Dave

Answer
Most shops rarely rebuild engines anymore due to high labor costs and lower complete engines.  Years ago, when we used to rebuild, we sent all our engines out to a machine shop for internal engine check out.  They would bore the cylinder, polish the crank, check the rod and recommend replacement or re-using.

A new engine is a little expensive, but a complete replacement will not nickel & dime your wallet.  I have rebuilt older engines only to have starters fail, then the alternator to fail, then the carb to wear out.  I have found a complete engine to cost more up front but I get more service and less frustation from a brand new replacement.

Have you priced a shortblock or complete engine for your mower?  You will have to contact you local Kohler engine dealer for shortblock and engine prices.  Compare the shortblock price with the local machine shop hourly rate as this can vary in different locations.

Are you using SAE-30 oil?  Is the engine consuming oil?  Do you have to add more than 4 ounces of oil each time you mow?

Let me know.
