Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter troubles., automatic compression release, hydraulic lifters

Question
I have a kohler command cv14 with an electric start. finally got everything wired correctly and the starter cranks but it slows to a stop when the piston goes up on the compression stroke. I can turn the flywheel by hand and it isn't too hard considering that its on the compression stroke...any ideas?

Answer
Hello Rick:

You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. Select the Command Single,CH/CV5-16 CH/CV410-493 Thumbnail. Select the Service Manual for the CV14 Engine. This is a Complete Shop Manual like the 1 Used in the Shops. From your Description it Sounds like a Bad Starter or a Broken ACR (Automatic Compression Release). The Starter has to be Removed and Checked at your Local Small Engine Service Center or a Shop the can Load Test Starters and Alternators. If the Starter is Good, then the ACR or the Cam will Require Replacing. Some Models had the ACR as a Part of the Cam and Other Models have the ACR as an Attachment to the Cam. This Engine Uses Hydraulic Lifters and there are No Valve Clearance Adjustments. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
