Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman 917.256610, craftsman 917, steering wheel puller

Question
QUESTION: The mower will only start if you jump it.  Repair guy said I needed a STAROR
assembly, which I understand to be the alternator but I cannot find an alternator
for this model on the Sear's parts page.

ANSWER: Hello Tim:

The Stator is Located Under the Flywheel of the Engine. It is a Series of Coils on a Plastic Holder that is Simply Bolted to the Engine and Wired Into the Harness to Keep the Battery Charged and Operate the Lights. The Breakdown you are Looking for is at the Kohler Engine Web Site. Most Kohler Engines use a Regulator with the Stator. The Regulator is Usually Bolted to the Outside of the Engine Block and can be Removed with Little Trouble. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Kohler) and Enter the Model and Spec Numbers (CV15S-41525). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Select the Ignition/Electrical File. The Stator is #s 15 & 44 in the Breakdown. This Engine Does Not use a Regulator, so the Problem is the Stator and the Stator Must be Replaced for the Charging System to Operate Properly. The Following is the Instruction File I Made for Removing the Flywheel from Most Mower Engines. It is the Basics and if you have a Question, Please Ask. Any Input to Make this File Better is Appreciated. ***Disconnect the Coil Wire from the Spark Plug. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Remove the Coil. Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model). Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. On Some Models you Can Not Use a Puller and Must Use a Pry Bar and a Pipe Cap that is Slightly Larger than the Crankshaft. Place the Pipe Cap Over the Crankshaft to Protect it. Place the Pry Bar Under the Thick Section of the Flywheel and Pull Up Against the Flywheel. **BE CAREFUL  DO NOT PUT A HOLE IN THE BLOCK UNDER THE FLYWHEEL** Now Hit the Pipe Cap that is on the Crankshaft (covered with the Pipe Cap). Repeat the Procedure Until the Flywheel can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. Remove and Replace the Stator and Assemble the Flywheel and Other Engine Components.  *** Be Sure you have the Flywheel Torqued to the Proper Torque (I require the Model and Spec/Type Numbers Off the Engine to Provide the Proper Torque) and Set the Coil Gap to .020in.. Use the Side Panel out of a Drink Carton. The Cardboard is Approximately the Correct Thickness. Turn the Flywheel so the Magnets Pull the Coil Tight against the Cardboard. Now Tighten the Coil and Slowly Turn the Flywheel while Pulling the Cardboard Out from Between the Coil and Flywheel. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Well, your instructions were perfect.  Now I am ready to torque the flywheel.
Model is CV15S and spec is 41525 family # is skh426u1g2rb.  displ (CC) is
426.  With this info can you give me the torque requirement?

Also, I also am missing 2 of the bolts that hold the engine to the frame.  Do
you know where I can get these.  I assume they are metric like everything else
on this mower.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hello Again Tim:

Kohler Specifications for the Flywheel Torque is 50 Foot Pounds.  As for the Engine Mounting Bolts, I Suggest you Take the Remaining Bolt to your Local Hardware or Automotive Parts Retailer and have them Match the Bolt. I have Seen Engines Mounted with 5/16", 3/8" and 7/16" Bolts as well as the Same Range of Metric Bolts. If you Require a Service Manual for this Engine, You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. Select the CH/CV5-16  CH/CV410-493 Thumbnail. Now Enter the Model Numbers (CV15S-41525) in the Search Box at the Upper Right and Click Search. Now Select the Service Manual Name TP-2339-D. You can Download and Save it to your PC or you can View it Online. Remember you can Only Download this File to your PC Once. You can View it Online as Many Times as you Wish. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
