Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no spark, briggs stratton, throttle plate

Question
I have a 5000 watt generator with a 10HP Briggs & Stratton. It has sat for two years with no gas. After last use it was professionally drained, cleaned and tuned up. I pulled it out, filled the tank, and it started on the first pull, but only ran about 15 seconds. I don't appear to be getting any spark, so I changed the plug. Still won't start. Any ideas?

Answer
First be sure it is spark related.  Remove the spark plug attach it to the wire and lay it against the cylinder head.  Pull the rope and watch for spark at the gap on the spark plug.  If there is no spark  be sure the on off switch is turned on this could be a toggle switch or key switch.  Check to see if there is a reset switch as part of the generator.

If the engine has spark then it is more than likely fuel related.  When an engine sits for two years deposits will form in the carburetor if it has been used.  If you are not getting fuel I would take the carburetor off and disassemble it completely.  Being sure the main nozzle is removed also.  Clean all passages with a wire from a twist tie and blowout with carburetor cleaner or compressed air.  Reassemble the carburetor and reinstall using new mounting gaskets.  Check the fuel filter to be sure it is not plugged toward and the bottom of the tank is clean.  There is kill switch on this unit so you can shut it off when you want to be sure that wire is attached.  I don't know on your machine but I think it will be at the panel where the governor linkage attaches to the engine.  Be sure that the linkage is operating properly in the throttle plate is in the start position, all the way open.  Take a look at these things and if it does not solve your problem please contact us again.  Good luck on your project.
