Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 03 Murray 425000x8, air filter element, computer keyboards

Question
Here's the problem with my Murray.  Starts fine and runs fine for awhile, but after a time (anywhere from 15 min to an hour and a half), starts sputtering like it wants to die.  After doing this 8 or 10 times and recovering, it finally does die.  When this started, it was quite a time before it had trouble, and I would immediately restart it and it seemed fine.  After about 6 mows, it's to the point where it starts acting up about 15 min into the mow, and still has problems when I restart.  Upon restart, I have seen flames come out of the exhaust pipe.  I know it has something to do with it misfiring, but I don't know enough about the engine to know where to start.  My neighbor says I might need to replace what he calls the "magnito".  I think this is the armature.  I wasn't sure if that could go bad or not.  I hope I have given you enough info to make an analysis.  Thanks for the help.

Answer
I believe your issue is fuel related.  It sounds like the engine is running out of fuel.  The first thing to check is your fuel cap vent.  Next check your you'll filter it may be in line or just a screen in the bottom of the fuel tank.  Next remove the fuel line from the carburetor and be sure you have good flow.  If everything is fine to that point remove the carburetor.

Purchase a carburetor kit and new mounting gaskets from a dealer.  Disassemble the carburetor.  Be sure you get the nozzle out.  The nozzle screws into the center of the carburetor and comes out in the throat of the carburetor.  Use the wire from a twist tie to clean all air and fuel passages.  Blow out with compressed air, carburetor cleaner, or canned air used to clean computer keyboards.

Reassemble carburetor using the new parts be sure to put im all the parts.  Attach using the new gaskets.  Install a new air filter element if needed.  Reattach fuel line and put fresh gas in the tank.  I think should take care of your issue.  Good luck on your project.
