Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Front Wheels, drainage ditch, transmission shaft

Question
Hi Fred, I have own a Toro. I don't have the model number in front of me. It is self-propelled with the front wheels and has the larger wheels in the rear. It is about 3 yrs old. I had the front transmission replaced last summer. My problem now is the small front axle springs and keys under the front wheel freeze up. I have to constantly lubricate with anti-seize. This will last for about 2-3 cuttings. At times I do cut my wet drainage ditch. What else can I do from having to do so much maintenance to the front wheels?

Thanks,
John

Answer
Lots of lubricant attracts lost of dirt.

First remove the front wheels and clean.  Remove the front gears on the transmission shaft.  Be careful not to loose the spring under the drive keys.  Clean all thoroughly and dry.  put the spring in the axle and push down with the key.  Slip the gear over the key.  Put the e-ring on.  If there is a grease fitting in the shaft put grease in till it just starts to come out.  If not put a few drops of oil on the gear.  install front wheels.

If you have a different model go to www.toro.com, find the look parts up link and click it.  Enter your model and serial numbers.  You have to have the model serial is optional.  Click on appropriate year.  When the next page comes up click on manuals and choose the one you want.  They are usually free downloads.
