Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): gilson tiller, engine model type, valve lapping compound

Question
QUESTION: I have an older Gilson tiller model 51148 that was my fathers and I am trying to get it back up and running. I put new belts on it and used it for about two hrs. It backfired and quit. I did not have any spark so I put new points and condenser in it. I got it to start for a few seconds and then it quit. Took it apart and it sheared the key holding the flywheel on the shaft. Put a new key in and it did the same thing. Can you tell me what is wrong.
Thanks Mark

ANSWER: What is the engine model, type and code number?

Sometimes you need to use some valve lapping compound to smooth the crankshaft to flywheel mating surface.  Remove the flywheel and key.  Place a small dab of valve lapping compound inside the flywheel taper.  Install on crankshaft and rotate back and fourth a few times.  Remove and clean off compound.

You're just ensuring the two parts fully mate.
Send me the engine info so I can see what you have.

Answer
Looking at the enigne parts list, there is a washer behind the starter clutch.  This washer is a spring type washer.  I have found small hairline cracks in old washers that can cause flywheel keys to shear.

Try the valve lapping compound trick and make sure the washer is in good shape.  Are you torquing the starter clutch to specs?

Let me know.
