my generator will only stay running on full choke,after it runs for awhile i can turn it off and wait 2 min and it wont start on full choke at all but will fire off on run mode. it will run great for about 1 min and then sputter and shut off. i changed fuel filter and plug, checked air filter it was clean took off carb clean as a whistle. don't know where to go now. what else could i do? generator sat up for 1 year or so but had no fuel in it. everything looked clean. i would appreciate any advise you could give me. i also ran 1/4 bottle of carb/fuel inj cleaner in with gas.    thanks  Nick

It's' not getting enough fuel to stay running.  Running on choke makes the engine run rich, too much gas and not enough air.  I would start at the top.  Remove the fuel cap and clean the vent.  Remove the shut-off on the bottom if the tank and clean the screen and the inside of the tank.  Then inspect the fuel lines.  Is there a crack or blister on the line? Does fuel flow freely through it.  If questionable replace them.  Remove the carburetor and disassemble it.  Clean EVERY fuel and air passage you can find with a wire from a wire tie. Blow out with compressed air.  If no air compressor use the canned air they have to clean computer keyboards.  Purchase a new carburetor kit and install it all. Replace every gasket surface on the carb mounting and air filter assembly mounting.  Be sure the mounting area of the carb is not warped.  Install lines and new filters and new fuel. If this is not it it is the electrical side of the Gen set.  

Check auto idle if equipped. How are the brushes on the Gen set?  Can you load the Gen set and make the engine rev up?  Plug a toaster or electric heater into it and turn them on while the engine is running.  If it is the Gen set side thats all I know about them but there are some good text books available. Check with the EETC.org to purchase a generator service manual used to study for a certification test.
