Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs OHV head bolt torque, crankcase pressure, bolt torque

Question
I'm replacing the head gasket on my Briggs 18.5 HP OHV engine.  What is the correct head bolt torque?

It was blowing oil out the porous bronze port of the fuel pump.  Do I need to replace the fuel pump at the same time if it was still functioning?

Answer
PART 1
210 two 230 inch pounds. Torque in a crisscross pattern upper left lower right upper right or left or right.

PART 2
Anytime in engine blows out oil there is a crankcase pressure problem or an overflowing crankcase problem. The easiest to check would be the overflowing crankcase simply check the oil. If the volume is increasing by itself gasoline is leaking into the crankcase causing your prop

if not in the engine oil level is going down you have an air leak check of gasket areas check for the oil filled tube goes into the block to be sure the ordering is intact make sure the dipstick O-rings seal is in good shape oil seals to be sure they are not leaking.

Next locate the crankcase breather remove it sure is not full of oil if it is thoroughly clean it or replace it, replace the gasket and reinstall the breather. Many times breeder to goes into the eighth of the air cleaner. That would cause oil to pump into the air cleaner and then into the engine causing clouds and clouds of smoke.

I believe I met engine the fuel pump is a pulse type pump that means that it operates from pulses from the crankcase. A pulses come from the pistons going up and down and the air pressure changing in the crankcase. If you are pumping oil at this point see above.

I hope this helps, good luck on your project.
