Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Dana Transaxel, dana transaxle, transaxel

Question
I have Craftman Lawn tractor model 917-270532 with a Dana D4360-140 transaxel six speed & reverse. Shifter stuck in third. I removed transaxel cleaned and replaced benitite (sorry about the spelling). Mower did the same thing. Removed again and replaced the clutch keys. Tractor still does not shift properly. If machine is turned off you can shift with no problem . Once you start the tractor and go a short distance you can not get it to shift to another gear. If you rock the machine some times it will come out of gear and most time not. Once again when you go again and stop you can not get it out of gear. I have replaced the belt. Checked the brake to make sure the pulley on the transaxel has stopped. Also checked the clearances on the idler and belt guides. Is there something in the axel itself that puts the transaxel in a neutral position so it can be shifted? Thanks

Answer
Don,

It could actually be several things causing this Can be Clutch Collar Or Maybe  In some cases from what i have seen on this Model Spicer Dana Transaxle sometimes the shaft idler and the Main Gear Combo Assy Mesh a Bit too Much causing wear on the Main Idler shaft and will cause it to slip in and out and remain stuck in gear I am gonna give you a link that shows this transaxle But would be better to have a service shop make the repair and adjustments.
