Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replace Starter Clutch on B&S 9HP, starter clutch, snapper rider

Question
On a Snapper rider; B&S 28B702; built in '98.  Starter clutch part #399671.
After removing the blower housing and the screen, what is the procedure to
remove then replace the starter clutch?  I asked yesterday and Tom graciously
replied, '..use part #19244 starter clutch wrench..'  I appreciate that, but I
could use a little more info please.  EG, actual procedure.  I was not allowed
to ask this followup to him.  Also, weird how I can't find my post from
yesterday except thru the link in the original email and the two emails I got
asking for a rating.  Thanks in advance!

Answer
Well, first you need to block the crankshaft from turning when you loosen the clutch.  You can do that is a couple ways.

1. Block the blade from turning with a block of wood wedged between the blade and the deck.

2. Remove spark plug, turn the engine till the piston is a the top.  Rotate the piston back 1/4th turn.  Take a piece of starter rope or a similar size rope, tie a knot in one end and feed it into the spark plug hole.  Put 3" or 4" in.  Turn the engine till the piston comes up to the top and the rope should stop it from going further.

3. If you do not have a starter clutch remove tool use a pipe wrench or large channel lock to grasp the starter clutch housing.  Turn counter clockwise to remove.

Good Luck
