Toyota Repair: 97 Tacoma Cranking Problems

Question
I am working on a friends truck, a 97 Toyota Tacoma with a 2.7l engine. He changed the fuel pump, and it ran for 3 weeks, then just cut off on him while he was driving down the road. It will crank with starting fluid, but shuts off after a few seconds. I can hear the fuel pump humming/clicking after it shuts off. Looking for some advice on troubleshooting the problem. Thanks

Answer
Hello, if it runs with starting fluid and then dies out it's a fuel issue, have you checked for any diagnostic codes yet? If not I think I would check fuel pressure, you can do so by just cracking one of the fittings loose on the fuel rail and see if fuel sprays out while cranking. Locate the diagnostic check connector under the hood ans see if there are terminals FP and B+, put a short jumper between them and see if the engine runs like this, if it does the fuel pump is not the problem and it may be a bad EFI relay or circuit opening relay.
Check the EFI fuse.
