Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Cheif Tiller, rear tine tiller, gearcase

Question
This is a rear tine tiller, 5hp.i checked the transmission oil by pulling a plastic cap on the side of the trans. I stuck a wire in there and all I got on the wire is what seemeed to be grease. Is it possible that there is grease used in this trans or should I put oil in it? If so What type of oil?

Answer
It could be grease but I don't remember who ever used it.  My guess is 90 weight gear lube.  There should be a plug in the lowers area of the gearcase.  Take it out and drain what is in there.  If no plug don't worry.  Put plug back in and set upright.  Fill with lube toll it comes out the fill hole. If it is in fact grease then you have to split the case to change it.

Good Luck
