Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine wont turn over when hot., lawnmower engine, compression stroke

Question
Briggs lawnmower engine, 16.5 HP, Model 42A707, Type 2238-E1, starts when cold, but won't turn over when hot.  Engine gets to compression stroke and stops rotation.  Battery and wiring are good.  Do such engines get harder to turn over when hot, and what could cause this to be excessively hard to turn over? Engine runs well with maybe slight miss when started.

Answer
There is a compression release system inside the motor that helps starting by releasing compression, this could be to blame, it's more of a job for your local small engine dealer. Also it does take more to turn over a hot engine, a lot of times the battery can also be to blame, as most people purchase the least expensive batteries when replacing them, not paying attention to the cranking amps which are important with larger engines.   .....Tom
