Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): electrical, push button starter switch, trickle charger

On my lawnmower I have two switches a push button starter switch and a kill switch instead of all the other safety switches and all that stuff. How am I supposed to connect the alternator so it will charge the battery?

Is this a tractor or a walk behind mower?  

If a walk behind there is usually a plug in charger for the battery and if there is a alternator it is at best a trickle charger.  You would have to run the mower for hours to completely charge the battery.  But, to answer your question the alternator is wired into the battery connector, where the battery plugs into the harness.
