Answer
Hello,

If the starter drive gear is turned out to the engaged position, it will not fit back in the engine.  It has a ratchet type mechanism in it so that if someone turns it, it will spin out but won't go back in to the retracted position.  When the engine starts, the flywheel spins the drive gear fast enough to overcome the ratchet and retract it.  The only way that I have found to get it retracted when it is off the engine is to spin it against a wire wheel on a bench grinder until it spins fast enough to retract.  Hold the starter up to the grinder so that the wire wheel can spin the drive gear.  It will make a clicking sound as it is spinning.  It takes quite a bit of power to get it spinning fast enough so it takes a good grinder to do the job.  Once it gets spinning very fast, the gear will retract to it's home position.
