Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): elec. wiring wheel horse lawn tractor, lt model, wheel horse

Question
I have an old wheelhorse lt model#1 0150 6 ser.#774719 It has a generator which I found  out has been rebuilt. They have the wire marked battery going from the voltage regulator to the negative terminal on the battery, is this correct?  The battery does not seem to be charging and I am curious if this is the reason. Also could you tell me if the generator terminal on the voltage regulator wires up to the armature post on the generator? It has a b&s 8hp engine model 190402 and the Battery is brand new. I bought this used and it runs great, just trying to resolve this charging issue. Thank you so much!

It may provide more information.  I have only saw a few of these systems and it have been over 15 years since I last worked on a starter/gernerator unit.  If I remember the regulator had polarity markings on the backside; you had to remove the regulator and look very close for the polarity markings.
