Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray 22415X8A, piston rings, head gasket

Question
Hello. I have a Murray push mower that will start strong for about 5 seconds but after that it will start to sputter and hesitate and eventually shut off once it gets to high grass. I have put new fuel in it, new air filter and new spark plug with no luck. I think it may have something to do with a choke but I cannot find anything on the mower to adjust this. Thanks in advance for any help. It will sure be appreciated! ~Rob.

Here are some possible problems you may have.

Problem: Engine lacks power (possibly after warmup).
Possible causes:

  1. Old gas, bad spark plug, very thick/dirty oil.
  2. Choke is partially closed.
  3. Carburetor needs adjustment or service.
  4. Ignition not timed correctly.
  5. Air filter is clogged.
  6. There is a lack of lubrication.
  7. Valves are not sealing properly.
  8. Piston rings are not sealing properly.
  9. Head loose or head gasket blown or damaged.
 10. Exhaust ports blocked (2 stroke).

You probably have a non adjustable choke This sounds like the carb needs cleaning, take some carb cleaner and spray inside the carb when you get it running if it stays running your carb needs cleaned. Take it off the mower(Remember where all the parts go take a digital picture to help you remember how to put the part back correctly) Clean the carb with the cleaner thoroughly and inspect the movable parts to see if they are free.
