Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and staton 12 hp i/c engine, briggs and staton, throttle shaft

the engine keeps reving higher and higher until it sounds like it will blow up. The throttle was locked open for some reason and i had to pry it to get it to free up again. it starts well and sounds good

SO what is the question?  Why?  Probably the throttle shaft stuck wide open.  This will usually happen if dirt or debris gets in there. Blow it out good and should be OK.

Other reason would be a stuck governor.  If it was this it will most likely happen again.  Be sure to get it shut off before the rods break.  If that the engine will have to be disassembled and a new governor installed.
