Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Stihl FS36 Runs Fine But Trimmer Head Barely Turns, vice grip pliers, torx screw

Question
Hi, Can you help me trouble-shoot this?  I can hear the drive cable rattle in the shaft when I rev the engine but the trimmer head doesn't spin with any force.  I suspect that a connection at one end of the cable has worn or the clutch is bad.  I took the front cover off but don't how to proceed to figure out the problem.

Answer
Hello Steve:

Remove the Shaft from the Unit. Now Pull the Drive Cable Out and Inspect the Cable Ends. If the Cable Ends are Good, then Replace the Cable and Hold the Cable End at the Engine with Vice Grip Pliers. Try to Turn the Trimmer Head while Holding the Vice Grips. If the Trimmer Head will Turn and the Cable is Not Turning, then the Trimmer Head Gear Box is Stripped. If the Trimmer Head Does Not Turn, then I Suggest you Replace the Clutch and Drum Assembly. On Some Model Trimmers there is a Female Torx Screw Inside the Drum Snout where the Drive Cable is Inserted for Operation. Removal of this Screw is Required to Remove the Drum. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
