Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): How to replace bottom oil seal?, snapper mower, clutch assembly

Question
QUESTION: I have an 18 year old 21” walk-behind Snapper mower with a B&S engine model 124702, type 0122, code 90030305.  It just took me about 1 ½ hours to start it after 2 years of sitting idle (the mower, not me!) and like it always did, it ran fine…except…I saw a heavy/thick oil seeping from under the engine on top of the mower deck.  Some was also under the deck in little globs.  I suspect oil mixing with dirt/grass thickened it.  I also suspect that I need to change the bottom oil seal in the engine.

1.   Can I change the bottom oil seal once I remove the engine from the mower and turn it upside down or do I have to open the engine and remove the internal parts to access the oil seal?  I’ve only cracked a small engine once in my life and it worked when I reassembled it, so I’ll do this if I have to.

I haven’t yet explored how to remove the blade clutch assembly underneath…if I have to do so to remove the engine.

2.   Is removing the blade clutch a straight forward procedure or will I have something I don’t expect flying across the garage that will be hell to put back in place?

Your response to these two issues will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Andy

ANSWER: Hello Andy:

There is Nothing that should go Flying Across the Garage. LOL. The Following is a Basic Instruction File I made for Removing the Lower Oil Seal from Most Small Engines. Any Input is Appreciated. **Remove the Blade and Blade Adapter. Sand the Crankshaft with Emory Cloth Sand Paper and Remove All the Rust and Burrs. The Using  a Small Flat Head Screwdriver, Pop Out the Old Seal. Sometimes, you have to Use a Small Cutting Chisel and Cut the Seal First. I Use Pipe of the Same Outside Diameter of the Seal(Close as Possible) and 3" Longer than the Crankshaft with an End Cap on it. Place the Seal Into the Engine Base and Get it Started. Place the Pipe Over the Crankshaft and Drive the Seal Into Place. Sometimes, if you have a Full Tool Set; you can Use a Deep Well Socket to Drive the Seal Into Place. Make Sure it is Deep Enough to Miss Hitting the End of the Crankshaft.** You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and the First 4 Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

Bottom flywheel assemb
QUESTION: John,

This is a follow-up relative to my July 25 question and your response.

I finally pulled the 5hp B&S engine off the Snapper walk behind to change the bottom oil seal.  Removing the Brake Matic blade clutch was a problem and continues to be.  Everything is off except the flywheel with a riveted-on steel cylinder which acts as the brake drum.  I need to remove this entire assembly in order to then remove the v-belt drive pulley to get access to the oil seal.

There is a fitting which holds the flywheel on the crank shaft (see photo).  It is flat on only two sides (1 9/16” across the flats).  Looks like a special tool fits it since it is inside the cylinder.  However, I tried to use a large crescent wrench head on to grab it and another to turn the first but without luck.  It is on very tight unless I’m not doing something correctly.  I did this both with a screw driver thru a flywheel hole jammed against the bottom of the motor and then holding the belt pulley with a pipe wrench.  No luck either way.  I have not used heat.  Do you have a “life saving” suggestion for me?

By the way, the fitting appears to be one piece and I’m guessing that it has female threads to screw onto the bottom of the crank shaft.  It is also threaded for the bolt that holds the Brake Matic assembly to the crank shaft.

Thanks very much for your help.  I really appreciate your time and this service.

Regards,

Andy

Answer
Hello Andy:

Usually this is a Slip on Unit. When the Center Bolt is Removed, then the Clutch/Brake Assembly can be Removed by Using a Puller (and Heat on some Occasions). To be Sure you have the Model and Style of Assembly I am Talking about, Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Thanks.
