Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Bolens ride on mower, oil level, crankshaft

Question
Our mower is about 4 years old. I was mowing the other day and it made a screeching noise then it popped. It started to smoke and I shut it off. Now it won't start back up. The smoke was coming out from around the engine area. What could it be? Please help !!!

Answer
A screeching noise is usually a belt.  Check all belts to be sure they are still in good condition. Will the engine turn over?  If not pull the plugs and see if it will turn over then.  If not, is there a click when you try to start it.  If so it may be an engine problem.  We have to isolate the problem.

Tractor or engine.  If the engine is free, not seized, put new plugs in, check the oil level and try to restart.  If the engine will not turn remove the belts from the engine and try to turn by hand.  Grab the crankshaft with the plugs out and turn the shaft.  If you cannot the engine has to be removed and inspected.  If it will turn freely.

Put new plugs in and check for spark.  If you have spark do you have fuel.  Meaning do the plugs get wet when trying to start the engine?  If no spark it is something else but from what you said I do not think this is the issue.

Did you hit something when this happened?  If so we have different problems.  Check these first and get back to me.
