Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Walbro WA 149A Carburetor, walbro, fuel inlet

Question
I have a Walbro WA 149A carburetor off a an old Craftsman trimmer. The trimmer would almost start with starting fluid sprayed into the carburetor but wouldn't stay running.  Is there some way of testing the carburetor without pulling it apart? ( I am a novice and do not want to get into something I cannot handle) I wondered if there was a fuel blockage this could be diagnosed by blowing into the fuel inlet with  free air movement meaning clear line while no air movement meaning blockage?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
The short answer is no. When you spray starting fluid into the spark plug hole you are doing what the carburetor is not.  They are really not that difficult.  If you want to try be sure you get a complete carb kit with the gaskets.

A couple of things first.

Is there fresh mixed fuel in the tank?
Fill the talk with a small amount of fuel, remove the fuel hose and be sure fuel is flowing.
Is there a primer?  Is so prime the heck out of it and remove the air filter and see if there is fuel in the throat of the carb. If so pull till it try to start on choke and then try with the choke off.  If there is no fuel in the throat you will have to remove the carb and replace it or rebuild it.  If you want to blow it out you should disassemble it first.  Go to www.walbro.com and enter your walbro model in their search area.  You may get lucky.
