Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): WheelHorse 417-A (circa 1986), asphalt driveway, grass area

Question
Hi John-
re: circa 1986 WheelHorse 417 A(utomatic)
   Engine KT17S-24362  17hp Kohler.

Suddenly, cranks but will not start. No spark. Subsequently,points/condenser/fuel filter were replaced.
No spark/no solution.
Replace the coil next ?? Any other ideas??
Please advise.

-Also, the grass cutting deck blades have been slowing considerably when I encounter the grass area when transitioning from the asphalt driveway area. While  on the (smooth)driveway area, the blades spin at the usual high speed. I've found that when I pull up on the clutch handle just a bit while on the grass that the PTO spins at the usual high rate of speeed, but that is not the solution,evidently....

-Also, I experience one backfire  when I shut off unit after cutting.

Thanks, John, am much obliged.

Answer
Hello Steve:

1- No Fire: Did you Polish the Contacts of the Point Set before they were Installed? Was the Point Set Gapped with the Point Set Plunger Positioned in the Out Position? Did you gap the Point Set to .015in? If Yes to these Questions, then it Sounds like the Coil is Indeed Bad. I Suggest you Remove the Coil and have it Tested at your Local Small Engine Service Center. 2- Backfire When Shutting Off the Engine. This is Usually Corrected by Allowing the Engine to Idle for a Period of 1 to 2 Minutes before Shutting Off the Engine. This Allows Any unburnt Gases to Clear the Exhaust Port and Muffler and Eliminates the Cause for the Backfire. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
