Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): yardman weedeater, recoil starter, piston rings

Question
my weedeater wont start cord is getting hard to pull is  the motor locking up.  What can I do to start it

Answer
Hello David:

The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated. **Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear. If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off. If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required. While the Muffler is Off, Look Inside the Engine and Inspect the Piston, Rings and the Jug/Cylinder. If the Piston, Rings or the Jug/Cylinder has Scratches/Gouges, then the Unit has been Run with an Improper Fuel Mix Ratio or with Straight Gas. Depending on the Size of the Scratches/Gouges, then Engine May or May Not be Bad. Light/Shallow Scratches Usually so Not Effect the Engine. The Heavier/Deeper the Scratches/Gouges the More Likely the Engine is Bad. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp  and Select Shop Online Parts and Accessories. Now Select the Model Tab. Select the OEM (MTD) and Enter the Model Numbers. Now Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. If the Exhaust Port, Muffler and Spark Arrestor Screen are Clear and the Engine is Still Catching, Remove the Recoil Starter and then Turn the Engine by hand. If the Engine Turns Smoothly, then the Recoil Starter needs Repairs. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
