Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler Command 15Hp, snapper mower, compression stroke

Question
QUESTION: I have a 10 year old Kohler Command 15HP on my snapper mower.  My daughter was mowing and she said, "Dad it ran out of gas."  She put gas in it and couldn't start it.  I tried, nothing.  I took the airfilter off and sprayed starter fluid into it - nothing.  I checked that gas was getting to the carb and through the filter - yes.  I pulled the plug and check for spark - yes.  I put a new plug in anyway - no change.  I put my finger over the spark hole to check for compression, yes.  But, it won't start.  Doesn't even sound like it fires once.  What am I missing?  I would so appreciate your help.

My best, Mark.

ANSWER: Hello Mark:

Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine or the Mower Model Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Engine Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Thanks.

QUESTION: Wow, that was fast.  I really appreciate this John.  I'm so frustrated by this.  The engine model number is:  CV15ST.  It says also  Family:  SKH426U1G2RB, Spec no. 41543, Displ (cc) 426,  Serial No 2700710204.  It is the motor in a 1997 Snapper Yard Cruiser (42 in).  Thanks again so much for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hello Mark:

Are you Sure the Engine was Not Flooded? If you have Gas, Fire and Compression, then the Engine will Run; Unless the Flywheel Key has Become Damaged or the Cam is Damaged, Causing the Valve Timing to be Incorrect. When the Flywheel Key gets Damaged, the Plug Fires at the Wrong Time During the Power/Compression Stroke and the Engine will Not Start or Run. Sometimes, just Shutting Off the Engine will cause Damage to the Flywheel Key. The Following is the Instruction File I Made for Correcting this Problem. It is the Basics and if you have a Question, Please Ask. Any Input to Make this File Better is Appreciated. ***Disconnect the Coil Wire from the Spark Plug. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model). Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. On Some Models you Can Not Use a Puller and Must Use a Pry Bar and a Pipe Cap that is Slightly Larger than the Crankshaft. Place the Pipe Cap Over the Crankshaft to Protect it. Place the Pry Bar Under the Thick Section of the Flywheel and Pull Up Against the Flywheel. **BE CAREFUL  DO NOT PUT A HOLE IN THE BLOCK UNDER THE FLYWHEEL** Now Hit the Pipe Cap that is on the Crankshaft (covered with the Pipe Cap). Repeat the Procedure Until the Flywheel can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. *** Now Replace the Key Between the Flywheel and Crankshaft and Reverse the Procedure. Be Sure you have the Flywheel Torqued to the Proper Torque (80 - 90 Foot Pounds)and the Coil is Gapped to .020in from  the Flywheel.  You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. Select Command Single. The Select the CV15-41543 Engine. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
