Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD/Craftsman 31cc tiller 316.29256, clutch assembly, echo trimmer

Question
Bought in 2004 for my father-in-law. By looking at some posts, surprised it ran this long. Engine lost compression from loose cylinder bolts (?)- one was really loose - and will not run. Likely toast as I can see scoring thru exhaust port. Question on short block and how the clutch assembly comes off the driveshaft.
short block - mtd part number in sears manual is 753-04707. have seen a couple new short blocks on the cheap. part number however is 753-04924. they look identical. are they interchangeable and do the carbs, etc mate? if so i might just try to fix.
clutch assembly-this is free spinning in both directions on the motor driveshaft-i do not see how it locks to the driveshaft to screw off. question is just how does it come off? guessing it works by centrifugal force when spinning. anyway there do not appear to be any bolts or any place to engage/lock it from the motor driveshaft so it can be what looks like unthreaded-driveshaft pix all look threaded. how does it come off?
thanks. also likely replacing with 2 cycle mantis as he uses alot. i know it is an echo motor and my 16 yr old echo trimmer still runs like a champ. think that this and the actual echo are same machine but mantis is cheaper. quality machine? thanks.

Answer
Hello Pat:

1- No the 753-04707 Short Block will Not Interchange with the 753-04924 Short Block. I Found Out a Long Time ago that Looks can be Very Deceiving. I Checked the Specifications of the 2 Short Blocks and the Carburetor and Exhaust Mounts are Different. You would Require a Different Carburetor and Muffler. If you Purchase a Muffler and Carburetor, then a Complete Engine or New Unit would be the Best Route. 2- The Clutch is Held on with a Torx Screw Inside the Nipple of the Clutch Drum/Bell the Trimmer Head Drive Shaft/Cable Inserts Into. Remove this Screw and the Clutch Drum/Bell can be Removed. 3- I have a Mantis and have Gotten Great Service Out of it. As Long as it is Properly Maintained and Stored, you should get Many Years of Good Service from the Mantis. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
