Question
this mower is a few years old, never had any problems the only thing is wen i pull the pull start rope it just unwinds not engaging onto the wheel. its just constantly unwinding without engaging model # 917.387240 is this fixable or do i need a new part.. thanks

Answer
Hello John:

Usually this is Fixable. According to the Sears Breakdown for this Unit, the Engine is a Tecumseh Model 143.986004. According to the Breakdown, this is a Non Serviceable Recoil Starter. However, you can Remove the Recoil Starter and Check the Starter Pawls. Operate the Starter while Watching the Pawls. If the Pawls Do Not Spring Out when you Pull the Rope, then Clean and Lightly Lubricate the Pawls. If you cannot get the Pawls to Extend as Designed, then a New Recoil Starter is the Only Other Option. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers (143.986004). Then Download the File for Online Viewing. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
