Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda mower wont start--UPDATE, honda hr214, honda mower

Question
QUESTION: John:

I followed your instructions and much to my surprise, the crank/flywheel key was in place and not sheared off!  Now I am really stumped.  I have owned this mower since new and have never hit anything with the blade particularly at the time it quit on me. When it was running it ran without vibration.  Any further ideas????  I am stumped!!

ANSWER: Hello BoB:

Check the Valve Clearance, Please. If the Clearance of the Compression Release on the Exhaust Valve (setting the Valve Clearance will Correct the Compression Release) is too Close, then the Compression Release Lowers the Compression Just before the Plug Fires and the Compression Loss is too Much and you End up with Low Compression and the Engine will Not Attempt to Start Also. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf  . If Possible, Please Use the Follow Up Feature. This Feature Shows me All the Conversations we have had. Thanks. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: My Honda HR214 SX GXV 120(about mid 80's vintage), will not start. I was using it when it died and would not restart. Here is what I have done.

1.I have checked the spark and it is good.
2.I changed the plug.
3.When I try to start it, the plug has gas on it but not like it is flooded so it appears that it is getting fuel.
4. I removed the valve cover and checked the valve action—
5. I removed the muffler thinking it may be carboned up.
6. I checked the compression >100lbs.
7. I changed the gas.
8. I installed a new carb---float was suspicous in the old one.
9. I even tried "quick start" with no success.
10. The motor does not even “catch” briefly--nothing
11: I checked the crank/flywheel key as per your instructions and it is fine.
12. I checked the valve clearance as per your instructions and they are within the specs your suggested.

Any further ideas??????? Is it possible for the timing to get out of wack?  Thanks

Answer
Hello Again Bob:

It is Possible that the Timing has Jumped Inside the Engine. It is Rare, but it can and Does Happen. The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Examining the Inside of a Small Engine and will Assist you in having Access to the Governor, Oil Pump (if Applicable) Cam and Crankshaft Gear. Any Input is Appreciated. **This is a Simple Process. Drain the Oil and Remove the Engine to the Work Bench with the Oil Pan Facing Up. I have a Wooden Rest that was Especially Made to Hold the Engine when in this Position. Using Fine Sand Paper, Remove ALL the Rust and Debris from the Crankshaft. Remove the Oil Pan Bolts. After All the Oil Pan Bolts are Removed; Tap Lightly on the Sides of the Oil Pan to Loosen it from the Dowel Pins. When the Oil Pan is Removed, you can See the Governor Resting on Top of the Cam Gear. ****If Required: Lift Off and Replace with a New Governor. Check the Engine Block for Debris from the Old Governor and Wipe the Inside of the Block With a Rag, Until Clean. Set the Governor Shaft So it will be Resting on the Governor whine the Oil Pan is Replaced and Carefully Replace the Oil Pan. If the Crankshaft Seal Was Not Leaking, then Leave it Alone. It Should be OK. You can Easily Replace it While Mounted on the Machine if Required Later. Make Sure the Governor Stays in Contact with the Governor Shaft while Replacing the Oil Pan. Re - Mount the Engine to the Machine. Refill With Oil. Your Internal Governor May Differ.**  Slide the Crankshaft Gear Off the Crankshaft and Inspect for Cracks and Check for a Broken Alignment Pin (the Pin the Aligns the Gear to the Crankshaft). If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
