Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 12HP B&S I/C in MTD Lawn Flite erratic throttle/choke flooding when engine off., engine model type, throttle position
lawn flite 12-38
I have not been able to find a model/serial on this yet, just bought it used from an older fellow who didn't want to tinker with it. MTD Lawn Flite 12-38, with a 12HP B&S I/C engine.

When I tried to start it, the engine was flooded entirely with gas; dripping out the exhaust when cranking attempted. So I drained crankcase, (a LOT of gas) refilled, and fired it up. Ran fine, although as time went, i had to apply choke to keep it running, and tinker with throttle position. Most of the time it wanted full choke, even though the engine was good and hot from mowing.

After I shut it off for a few hours, I went to check it out and found the engine completely flooded again. I have drained the engine, refilled with oil again, and left the fuel line shut-off this time!

Wonder where I should start, sounds like a stuck float for the flooding, but why would engine want full choke when at operating temp? Any links to manuals would be most appreciated! thank you for your time.

Answer
I have not found any free Briggs links.  Either the float is bad or more likely the inlet needle is leaking.  Either way you should remove, dis-assemble and clean the carb with compressed air and carb cleaner.  Before you take the carb off go to your local Briggs dealer and purchase a carburetor kit.  You will need the engine model, type and code number for the kit.  The number should start with 28xxxx.

Most likely cleaning the carb will solve the choke issue as well.  As you remove and dis-assemble carb take several pictures so you know how is goes back together.

Let me know if this helps.
