Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 17.7 engine muffler glowing, twin cylinder engines, white lawn tractor

Question
QUESTION: Have a white lawn tractor engine family 4tpxs.4902aa and the muffler get red hot what might be the reason for that

ANSWER: Hello Jeff:

The Usual Causes for this is 1- A Damaged Flywheel Key and 2- On the OHV Engines, the Valve Clearances Require Resetting. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Unit at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (MTD)  and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View.  **I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) on the Compression Stroke When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .007in - .009in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. Be Sure the Piston is at TDC on the Compression Stroke.**  If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks the valves were off but it is still doing the same thing and the key way is good

Answer
Hello Jeff:

Replace the Muffler. With the Valves Out of Adjustment, it Allowed Carbon to Block Some of the Baffles and is Not Allowing the Engine to Exhaust Properly and Heating up the Muffler. Is the Engine Turning the Proper RPMs? If the Engine RPMs are too High, then the Muffler will Heat Up as you Described. Are you Using a Fuel Additive? If Yes, then Stop Using it. Fuel Additives can Cause the Problem you Described. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
