Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): scotts garden tractor model s2554 1998 kohler engine, safety switches, tractor model

Question
QUESTION: hello,John          I was cutting my lawn, when I pulled my pto switch in order to reverse without disengaging my blades when it came to a abrupt stop. I restarted and attempted to move ,but with no luck. I assumed it was one of the safety switches, brake switch, reverse switch ,or even the pto switch it self . After replacing pto sw.and brake sw.and jumping out remaining switches, I was able to drive tractor.I then attempted to engage pto but immediately cuts out ,not a abrupt stop like if the pto malfunctioned but instead like if you had turned ignition off.I am presently ordering replacement relays, but wondering if I missed somthing.I also checked if pto engaged, and it does but it stalls soon there after. All of these tests were done with deck off tractor, as not to put a load on the clutch to rule out any binding that may contribute to the stalling of the tractor .        thank you ,rick

ANSWER: Hello Rick:

Check the Charging System. If this Engine has the Carburetor Solenoid and the PTO Draws the Voltage in the System to 10.5VDC or Less the Carburetor Solenoid Shuts Off and the Engine Quits. If the Stator or Voltage Regulator is Bad the Voltage will Not Stay High Enough to Keep the Carburetor Solenoid Open when the PTO is Engaged. If a Safety Switch is Bad the Same Problem will Occur. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Catalog you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: hello,John          I have replaced to date both relays, pto switch, brake sw,regulator-rectifier. I checked the voltage out of the regular,it states 38 volts ac outer tabs-14vdc center tab and ground. I disconected eletric pto and pulled pto switch with the same results. I've noticed that it stalls pulling pto sw and or releasing brake switch. I was about to energize the carb with an out side power source to rule out maybe a gounded out wire on the frame some where. I know you asked me to check the stator, but how can i check voltage drop as when I pull pto sw or release brake the engine stalls.   please help!!   Thank You again john

Answer
Hello Again Rick:

The "Releasing the Break" Indicates a Bad Seat Safety Switch. **Check the Seat Safety Switch. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY. I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed. Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch Jumper from Same Color Wire to Same Color Wire). The Seat Safety is Showing No One is Seating in the Seat when the Clutch or Blades are Engaged.** Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. This Mower May have a Safety Interlock Relay that is Bad Also. With the Mower Model Numbers I can See the Schematic and Know for Sure. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
