Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh lawn mower engine surges, stops, engine spec, carburetor

Question
I've owned my lawnmower for only a couple of years.  It has a Tecumseh LV195EA engine, spec 362001D and DOM 04058CD0357.  It has no choke and no throttle.  A week or so while I was mowing the engine began to surge then slow down, the RPM going up and down like that.  It has gotten worse.  Now it runs fine for only a couple of minutes, then begins to oscillate, then quits.  Then I can't restart it.  If I let it sit for a while sometimes I can restart it, although it has been getting worse.  Nothing in the manual helps, and Tecumseh's web site is worthless.

Your carburetor is more than likely the problem here. When they start to get bad it will start surging and then hard to start with out dumping a lot of fuel directly into the carburetor throat. Take the carburetor apart and clean it as best you can. You will need a Rebuild kit and new gaskets to put this all back.
