Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower blade removal., connecting rod, cleaning solution

Question
QUESTION: I have a Lawnboy model 10202 Silver Series, S.N. 3900001-3999999 with Tecumseh engine TVS 115-57901A.

Last summer the connecting rod broke and I want to replace the engine. How do I remove the blade? Does the nut turn clockwise or counter-clockwise to remove it? I've tried both, but don't want to turn to hard in the wrong direction.

On one flat side of the nut is a small square cut into the nut and in the center of that is something round. Thinking it was a pin I tried to punch it out, but, again, didn't want to force anything. I didn't notice a pin in the parts list.

By the way, how much time could it be expected to take to have the connecting rod replaced.

Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello Jerry:

Depending on the Backlog of Work in the Shop, you can Figure on a Couple of Days. Usually the Engine is Disassembled and Dipped in Cleaning Solution before Replacing the Components. Also the Cylinder has to be Honed even if you are Not Replacing the Rings so the Old (or New) Rings can Reseat to the Cylinder. The Small Square in the Nut is the Lock Stamp. This Makes the Nut a Locking Nut and is Hard to Remove. Turn the Nut in the Same Direction the Blade Turns During Operation. Usually Counter Clockwise. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: Got the blade off, now I'm trying to figure out how to remove the plate and collar assembly, and the pulley that the belt goes around for the self-propelled action.

The set screw in the pulley is loose, but when loose, a few turns counter-clockwise tightens it. Turned back clockwise to the point where it is loose again, a couple more turns in that direction tightens up again. In other words, when I turn the set screw in either direction, it loosens at a certain point, but tightens again. Is the set screw suppose to be completely removed or is it supposed to tighten when turned in either direction?

Also, how is the plate and collar assembly removed? This is the part that the blade attached to. If I can get the pulley loose enough, the plate & collar assembly would have to come off to remove the pulley. At least that's how it looks in the parts diagram.

Answer
Hello Again Jerry:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm?xCaller=LawnBoy and Select Start Parts Viewer. Then Enter the Model Numbers (10202) and Click Search. Then Select View Assembly Drawings. Then Select the Component you Wish to View. Select the "4 Cycle engine, Fuel Tank and Blade Assembly" File. The Collar (Belt Guide) Assembly is Bolted to the Frame Using the Engine Mount Bolts. The Blade Adapter (the Plate) is on a Wedge Fitting. I have a 3 Arm, Flat Jawed Puller that Slides Between the Collar (Belt Guide) and the Blade Adapter (Plate). Tighten the Puller and Hit the Puller and the Blade Adapter will Pop Off. Then the Pulley will Slide Off without Removing the Collar (Belt Guide). Usually I Remove the Set Screw Completely. If it is Locking up when Removing, then Turn it Until it Stops. This Should be Far Enough for Removal. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
