Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda Mower Transmission Problem, honda mower, honda mowers

Question
QUESTION: I have a Honda HRR2162TDA that is very difficult to pull backwards. I checked the cable and it seems fine. I would guess this means a transmission problem. I stripped the mower down to access the transmission but can't seem to figure out how it comes off the axle. Is it permanently attached? I have all the cables removed. I was going to spend the money for a shop manual but is it worth it? How much would a new tranny cost? The mowers not that old (4yrs) with very few hours. I have a Honda HRM215PDA with a transmission problem and they tell me its a $300 item. No luck with Honda mowers and transmissions. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Hello Jeff:

Would this be a HRR216K2TDA Mower? If yes, then from your Description it Sounds like the Wheel Ratchets are Sticking or Worn and Require Replacing. The Axle is an Assembly that Includes the Ring Gear. I Suggest you Disassemble the Wheels, Clean and Lubricate the Ratchet Assemblies and Replace Worn Components as Required. Usually Dirt and Dust Cause the Ratchets to Stick and Cause the Problem you are Having. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram and Select the Catalog American Honda. Select Lawn Mower and then Scroll to your Model. Then Select the Rear Wheel File. What is the HRM215PDA Transmission Doing? If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: John... I see all the listings for an HRR216K2TDA but mine says HRR2162TDA (including the manual). I don't believe this to be an issue because the exploded views seem identical to what I have.

Since I had one of the wheel/gears off during the troubleshooting process I checked the ratcheting function. I must confess that I am confused. When the wheels are going backwards (i.e. pulling mower back) the gear moves the axle. When pushing the mower forward the ratcheting occurs. Mower is off of course. This is the same for the other mower which I have not touched by the way. I would think that the ratcheting would occur when pulling the mower back not pushing it forward. What am I missing? Squeezing the clutch (handle bar) stops the mower from beeing pulled back but does not effect pushing it forward (again with the mower off) I assume because it is ratcheting in that direction. So I guess what I am saying is ... the ratcheting seems to work but not in the direction I expected. Pulling the mower back is enganging the axle/transmission which is what led me to the conclusion that the transmission was my problem in that something was causing extra friction when pulling backwards. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to spend over $100 for a transmission to find that its something else.

The HRM215PDA transmission dosn't engage consistantly. The self propel is jumpy, engaging off and on every couple of seconds like the transmission is "slipping".

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Again Jeff:

The Statement, "Self Propel is Jumpy, Engaging Off An On Every Couple of Seconds" Tells it All. The Ring Gear or the Pinion Gear of the Transmission has a Broken Tooth. These Transmissions are Small and a Broken Tooth will be Encountered Every 2 to 3 Seconds or Less if there is More than One Tooth Broken and Cause the Exact Problem you Described. I Suggest you Price the Transmission at Outdoor Distributors @ 1-877-707-2787 (http://www.outdoordistributors.com/). If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
