Nissan Repair: a/c clutch, nissan maxima, compressor assembly

I have a 1999 Nissan maxima the a/c clutch went out. I want to know if I can replace just the clutch or if I have to replace the whole unit. I have been told both so I don't know what to do.

The clutch can be replaced separately. However sometimes for a few dollars more you can get a rebuilt compressor assembly and replace the entire thing. Do you know why your clutch went out? If the compressor is dragging it, then it might be wise to replace the entire unit.
