Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower Starter Issue, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
I have a Murray Select riding mower. It has a Briggs & Stratton Engine, Model# 21B807, Type 0239E1, Code040723Z.

The starter will spin when the start key is turned, however the throwing arm doesn't activate so that the gears in the starter do not make contact with the flywheel. They just spin in place. We just installed a new battery. The battery was installed backward to begin with, but is currently installed correctly. Did we fry the starter? What can I do?

The starter is not fried as it is still spinning, you probably have a problem with the starter drive not engaging or the solenoid not pulling the drive.Listen if can here a click when you try to engage the drive,if you hear the click then the solenoid is good if not you will need a new one. We are a Briggs dealer and if you need parts we are really reasonable. E-mail me at gb@gbelect.net for any more help.
