Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Vanguard Valve guide, appropriate boxes, push rod

Question
I have an M&W mover with a 16hp B&S Vanguard that broke a push rod. Dealer says he has seen cooling fins pack with dirt, overheat, and the guide slips down, holds the valve open and the push rod comes out. This appears to be the case but my guide is clear to the top holding the valve closed. I'm guessing it slipped down, held valve open, piston hit valve and it drove guide to the top. In any case the guide is now loose in head. Is there a fix or do I buy a $150 head?

Answer
Hello Todd:

If the Small Engine Service Center is Set Up to do it, then the Guide can be Replaced for Approximately $75.00us to $100.00us. Most Times a Customer here Asks for a New Cylinder Head, so my Valve Guide Tools have Not been Used for Several Years. This is the Reason Most Shops Do Not Do Valve Guides. The Equipment is Too Expensive and Rarely gets Used. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Unit at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
