Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter for craftsman 917.255740, twin cylinder engines, craftsman 917

Question
i have checked the sears web site and could not find the starter listed. is there somewhere that i can get a replacement starter? i believe that the starter is weak, because the motor act's like it has too much compression, or something. when i try to start the mower it spin's untill it get's compression then stop's. is there something else i should check first?

Answer
Hello Otis:

This is Usually Caused by the Valve Clearance Requiring Resetting. The Engine Model is a 143.366012. To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action and Enter the Model Numbers (143.366012) and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. **I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) on the Compression Stroke When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .004in - .006in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. Be Sure the Piston is at TDC on the Compression Stroke.**  The Starter Part Number is 36680 and is Listed for $129.99us at the Sears Site. I Suggest you Set the Valve Clearance First. The Description you Gave is Exactly the Way the Engine Acts when the Valve Clearance is Off. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
