Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): murray riding 30 gear issues......., shift linkage, select shop

I have a Murray 30" riding mower model#30577x8a......The mower will go in reverse and first gear, but not gears 2 thru 5. I have checked and replaced the axle key located in the rear tire axle. what would cause the mower to only go in reverse & first and not 2-5. Thanks

From your Description it Sounds like the Shifter Keys Inside the Transaxle are Worn and Require Replacing. If you have Inspected the Shift Linkage and the Linkage is Not Bent or Binding, then the Shift Keys Require Replacing.  Go to this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Murray) and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Then Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View. This is a 1998 Year Model Lawn Tractor. You can View a Breakdown of the Transaxle at this Site Addy; http://www.m-and-d.com/dana_foote_parts.html and Scroll Down to the View Dana/Foote Parts Diagram Window. Now Scroll in this Window to your Model Transaxle. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps.
