Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no reverse, snapper rider, shift lever

Question
I have a snapper rider (about 15 years old).  The reverse just stopped working.  Prior to the failure, it was difficult to get it into reverse.  Now the shift lever easily slips into the reverse slot but it doesn't work.  Forward gears seem to be working fine.  It's as if something is not connected.
